Gertrude Vanderwerp, 99, recently of Fairfield, Ohio, longtime resident of Platte, South Dakota, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 7, 2016 at Hospice of Cincinnati, Blue Ash, Ohio. A Visitation will be held Monday, July 11, 2016, 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Mueller Funeral Home, 6791 Tylersville Road, Mason, Ohio 45040. The Funeral Service will be held Monday at 5:00 PM at Mueller Funeral Home. Funeral Services in Platte, South Dakota are 10:30 AM Friday, July 15, 2016 at the Platte Christian Reformed Church. A Committal Service will follow at Platte City Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to services on Friday.
Gertrude (Geusebroek) Vanderwerp was born on Thursday, March 15, 1917 in Geddes, South Dakota to Stephanus and Cora (DeVogel) Geusebroek. She graduated from Geddes High School, class of 1934. On January 1, 1942 Gertrude was united in marriage to Henry Vanderwerp at her parent’s home in Geddes, they were together 56 years. She was an active member of the Platte Christian Reformed Church and a long time member of the Platte Women's Club where she served as Treasurer of the Library Board.
Gertrude was a seamstress most of her life in addition to taking care of her family and home. She enjoyed boating and fishing on the Missouri River in South Dakota as well as going on road trips with her beloved husband, Henry. Gertrude loved staying active in her community and enjoyed playing bridge and other card games. She moved to Fairfield, Ohio in 2009 where she became a resident of the Waterford of Fairfield Senior Living Apartments and made many new friends. She will be missed by all that knew and loved her.
Grateful for having shared in Gertrude’s life: her daughter, Jane (Dennis) Trchka of West Chester, Ohio; two granddaughters: Amy (James) Drake of Fairfield, OH and Molly (John) Sautman of Springboro, OH; six great-grandchildren: Kaylyn Drake, James "Tre" Drake, Colton Drake, Elizabeth "Elie" Sautman, Olivia Sautman and Alexander Sautman; along with many other loving family members and friends.
Gertrude was preceded in death by: her parents, Stephanus and Cora Geusebroek; her husband, Henry Vanderwerp (Dec. 22, 1998); two sisters: Lena Gardiner and Katherine Underwood-Miya; and a sister-in-law, Marjorie DeBoer.
