After high school he joined the Air Force serving at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas. While there he was involved with the U-2 High Altitude Reconnaissance Program which was responsible for high altitude covert surveillance over the Soviet Union. He was one of a small number of military personnel who knew when and where the flights were occurring.
After his discharge he took a position with Peter Kiewitt and Sons in payroll while the Big Bend Dam was being built in Fort Thompson. Soon after he was married to Mary Beth Johnson in Platte.
Over the years Charles was a restaurateur, sold real estate, and most recently owned and operated Dakota Express.
Charles was an excellent golfer, having won many area tournaments, as well as occasionally relieving many of his golfing buddies of their extra cash. He also loved to read and had a passion for baseball.
