Maxine Adele (Neilson) Johnson was born on March 10, 1919 in Hetland, SD, to Max and Caroline (Wickander) Neilson. She graduated from Hetland High School and attended General Beadle State College in Madison, SD, where she earned a Teaching Certificate. Maxine taught school for approximately five years.
On December 15, 1946, Maxine married Alexander “Alex” O. Johnson in St. Paul, MN. They farmed in the Lake Preston area and then De Smet, SD before moving to Platte, SD in 1958 where they owned and operated Johnson Bakery until Alex’s retirement due to health issues in 1977. Maxine then worked as Office Manager for Dr. Mills in Platte until she retired.
Maxine was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church where her love of music led to many opportunities to lead and sing in the choir. She was widely known for her passion and talent for baking, especially designing and creating wedding cakes. Maxine touched many in her community, as well as friends and relatives through this unique gift. She also enjoyed sewing and quilting.
Maxine was an avid reader, particularly of scripture and books of faith. She wrote many commentaries on her readings and her thoughts. One wasn’t in her presence for long before her love and her faith in her Savior, Jesus Christ, was clearly evident and contagious.
Grateful for having shared in Maxine’s life: her daughter, Judi Johnson of Costa Mesa, CA; two grandsons: Jonathan and Christopher Johnson; a great granddaughter, Elise Johnson all of Sioux City, IA; a brother, Mayo Neilson of Hot Springs, SD; along with many nieces and nephews.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Alex (2003); her son, Kebbin (2001); her parents, Max and Caroline Neilson; a sister, Helen and husband, Dr. Robert Westaby; and a sister-in-law, Marj Neilson.
