Judy DeJong
Born in Galesburg, Illinois on March 17, 1937. Daughter of Margret (Miller) and Keith Edwards and sister of Bobbi Black (Stuart). Judy graduated from Springfield High School in Illinois in 1955. She graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder with a Bachelors Degree in Education. One of her fondest childhood memories were the summertime trips with her parents to Lake Michigan.
Judy married Lloyd DeJong on October 23, 1971 in Wichita, KS, while Lloyd was a pilot at McConnell AFB, shortly after his return from Vietnam. Her family moved to Clovis, NM in 1973, and then to Platte, SD in 1975. Her four children: Chris, Katherine, Michael, and Sarah attended Platte Schools and South Dakota Universities. She was a member of the Olive Presbyterian Church in Platte.
She had a passion for teaching and truly enjoyed her time working with the children in the Platte area and reconnecting with her students after they were grown.
Judy enjoyed watching the birds behind their home (Cardinals in particular), decorating the front yard and the pond. She loved to play tennis, bridge and golf, and was the queen of family game nights, with a special passion for high stakes “Poop on your neighbor”. She was famous for declining to be on a Trivial Pursuit team, but shouting out the answers anyway.
Family gatherings were her favorite time. She loved Christmas and everything that goes with it: glitter, tinsel, ribbons, presents, and family. She loved Christmas so much she had a Christmas tree permanently set up in the dining room with more decorations than the tree at the White House. When you got a package from her, it would be perfectly wrapped with a beautiful bow on top. She loved driving around looking at Christmas lights. One of our favorite holiday memories was staying in the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City. It was so beautiful.
Grateful for sharing in her life were: her husband of over 45 years, Lloyd DeJong (Platte); son, Chris and wife, Lisa Davis - grandchildren: Bobby, Carly, and D.J. (Lawrence, Kansas), daughter, Katherine Davis (Phoenix, AZ), son, Michael and wife, Jaime DeJong - grandchildren: Sidney, Samantha, Caleb, and Caiden (Harrisburg, SD), and daughter, Sarah DeJong and Matt Ratcliffe (Phoenix, AZ).
Her family sends a very warm thank you to all of you who shared in her life and in particular those who helped her in her late stages of her life. Your friendship was very special to her.
