Obituary for Dolores Mae Kalda (Sponheim)

Dolores Mae Kalda, 91, of Platte, SD passed away Monday, October 16, 2017 at Platte Health Center Avera. Memorial Services are 10:30 A.M. Monday, October 23, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Platte. Visitation will be held from 6:00 – 7:00 P.M. Sunday, October 22, 2017 at Mount Funeral Home in Platte with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service.

Dolores Mae (Sponheim) Kalda was born on April 24, 1926 to John Sjur and Dagny Sophia (Hauglid) Sponheim on the family farm in Rock County near Jasper, MN. She graduated from Jasper High School in 1943 and went on to continue her education by completing the Victory Nursing Program at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Working as a Registered Nurse at Sioux Valley Hospital she met her future husband.

On June 8, 1947 Dolores was united in marriage to Dr. Ellison Franklin Kalda in Jasper, MN. Together they moved to New York where she was employed as an OB Nurse at the Staten Island Hospital while Frank interned there.

Dolores became a resident of Platte, SD on October 15, 1949. She filled her 68 years there by being an active part of many local organizations. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Platte Hospital Auxiliary and Acacia Chapter #63 Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed quilting and was golfing until the age of 88 – winning several local tournaments. To her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Dolores was lovingly known as “Super Gran”.

Grateful for having shared in Dolores’ life: her five children: Deborah Foxley of Platte, SD, Pamela (Randy) Kuiper of Midland, TX, Dr. Ellison F. (Lauren) Kalda II of Sioux Falls, SD, Rebecca (Knut) Heier of Speyer, Germany and Barry (Kathy) Kalda of Platte, SD; 15 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Irene Sponheim of Aberdeen, SD; 10 nieces and nephews; along with many friends.

Dolores was preceded in death by her husband, Frank (Dec. 29, 1995); her parents; three sisters; and six brothers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in honor of Dolores may be directed to: Platte Area Pool Foundation (PAPF), 5 Kansas Ave., Platte, SD 57369 or Platte City Cemetery, PO Box 67, Platte, SD 57369.
