Florence Rose Westra, 87, of Platte, SD passed away Saturday, October 28, 2017 at Platte Care Center Avera. Funeral Services are 2:00 P.M. Friday, November 3, 2017 at First Reformed Church in Platte. A Committal Service will follow at Platte City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Thursday, November 2, 2017 at Mount Funeral Home in Platte with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service.

Florence Rose (Demmon) Westra was born on April 1, 1930 to Henry and Alice (Fyelander) Demmon in Platte, SD. She graduated from Platte High School in 1948 and was united in marriage to Gary D. Westra on August 24, 1948 in Corsica, SD. Florence was a hard worker who never complained and took pride in being a farmwife working alongside Gary. Together they farmed and raised livestock in Charles Mix County, SD until retiring in 1980, moving to Platte in 1983. It was then that she and Gary took up golf and she helped with the Meals on Wheels program.

In 2009 Florence was baptized and made profession of faith in the First Reformed Church in Platte; she was an excellent cook and a good friend to others. She enjoyed her friends and visiting with people – especially the cousins. Florence loved kids and was known for her fondness of chocolates.

Grateful for having shared in Florence’s life: her brother, George (Delores) Demmon of Portland, OR; a sister-in-law, Donna Westra of Platte, SD; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Florence was preceded in death by her husband, Gary (Sept. 25, 2009); her parents, Henry and Alice; step mother, Faye Pulse; eight siblings: Donald, Verna, Frances, John, Hazel, Helen, Fred and Dorothy; a step brother, Bob; and a step sister, Helen.
