Alfred Van Zee, 91, of Platte, SD passed away Friday, June 8, 2018 at Platte Health Center Avera. Funeral Services are 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at the Platte Christian Reformed Church. A Committal Service with Military Honors will follow at Platte City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at Mount Funeral Home in Platte with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service.
Alfred Van Zee was born on May 28, 1927 to Fred F. and Jennie (Boer) Van Zee in Corsica, SD. He attended country school in Clark Township. He went on to serve in the US Army during the Korean War from 1951 – 1952, receiving two Purple Heart Awards for his injuries. On June 1, 1956 Alfred was united in marriage to Alice Boltjes at the Platte Christian Reformed Church.
Alfred was a farmer his whole life. He also helped hand pick corn and drove truck during the winter months before he was married. He was born, raised and remained for 90 years on his family’s homestead in Douglas County, SD. He was a member of the Platte Christian Reformed Church and Campbell-Timmerman American Legion Post #115 of Platte. He also served on the New Holland Christian Grade School Board, FHA Board and Platte Hospital Board.
Alfred enjoyed wood working, traveling, golfing, reading and bowling – for which he earned various trophies.
Grateful for having shared in Alfred’s life: his wife of 62 years, Alice Van Zee of Platte, SD; three children: Randy (Kimberly) Van Zee of Lake Worth, FL, Jan (Larry) Hansum of Platte, SD and Jodi (Cory) Weins of Platte, SD; ten grandchildren: Nathan, Jonathan, Michael and Nicholas Van Zee, Riley (Kate) Hansum, Nicole (Aaron) Reiser, Devan (Matt) Haack, Bennett, Will and Tori Weins; three great grandchildren: Jaxton and Ella Reiser, Colton Hansum; a sister, Evelyn Holleman of New Holland, SD; two sisters-in-law, Cornelia Tjeerdsma of Avon, SD and Berniece (Harold) Jaeger of Marion, SD; three brothers-in-law: Clarence (Elaine) Boltjes of Platte, SD, Robert (Barb) Boltjes of Platte, SD and Rodney (Marge) Boltjes of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; along with several nieces and nephews.
Alfred was preceded in death by infant twin daughters; two sons: Todd Van Zee and Daren Van Zee; a great granddaughter, Mackenzie Haack; his parents, Fred and Jennie Van Zee; two sisters: Jeanette (Simon) Munneke and Myrtle (Hans) Groen; and three brothers-in-law: Lyle Holleman, Jim Tjeerdsma and Percy Boltjes.
